Before we can discuss "waste handling", we need to define what "waste" is. Used welding rods and printer paper? Moldy blankets? Dead solar panels and batteries? Whatever is in the shop vac? Fish innards, and scales and fins and etc? Used car tires (or their parts) and engine oil?

To me, waste is something people ordinarily don't want to deal with, linked with food production, as in this case, it should be taked to be most biological leftovers, sewage and cellulosic material (paper products).
The toilet is probably the single most wasteful product and demand of 'civilization'. It serves a purpose, but not efficiently.
Sewage is generally considered to be waste, but it does hold nutritive value, just not in a form generally available to the so-called higher forms of animalia.
In addition, paper products are also an extremely large portion of the normal waste of 'civilization'.
By separating and recombining these two waste-streams, and using the results, we can effectively reduce the vast majority of household waste.
Separating toilets, and urinals can be used to collect urine, which is excellent for pretreating paper products. This can be added to feces, then used in an anaerobic digester, to accomplish multiple goals. 1) produce useful energy, in the form of methane 2)treat the sewage, to eliminate pathogens 3) make a suitable effluent to use as fertilizer, for food production, in hydroponics and its' variations
MOST biological 'waste' can be made use of, with a digester. Things like bone, scales, feathers, hair, and fingernails don't digest well and can eventually clog a digester, if it does not pass through. They CAN be handled better, by using aerobic composters.

My definition of waste would be anything that you have that can't find a use for. Organics can continuously be reused. So can most basic materials. It's going to be the more complex materials where you will run into problems.
